Gerrad Oishi

a message from our CEO

Last year, COVID-19 challenged us all to reflect on the fundamental importance of home and community.

The pandemic revealed the importance of having a safe, secure and affordable home. It highlighted the gaps that continue to exist for many families who are looking for stability through home ownership.

For many families, the idea of owning a home  starts off as a distant dream. Because of your support, we’re able to transform that dream into reality.

In a year where nothing went as planned, we saw our community come together to make 29 families’ dreams of home ownership come true.

Even as a number of Habitat homeowners experienced layoffs or changing family circumstances, we were able to provide support and mortgage relief to help them weather the COVID-19 storm.

As I reflect on the unprecedented year, I’m proud of the ways our team and supporters adapted, innovated and pushed forward amidst the uncertainty.

We know there will be new challenges in the year ahead. But we also know that with your support, we will continue to help families build strength, stability and independence through affordable home ownership.

With thanks,

meet Nicole

Five years ago, she started her dream job working with immigrant women. She loves her work and providing for her daughter, Grace. “I have seen my strength and resilience grow as a full-time working single-mother.”

But when she thought about owning a home, it seemed impossible.

Nicole faced major financial constraints. Saving for a down payment was simply out of reach. Tired of living so close to the edge every month, Nicole moved into a near-market rental through Calgary Housing.

75% of households have insufficient income to purchase a home. Families are trapped in a rental cycle, without any long-term solutions.

but there
is a solution

Nicole knew about Habitat for Humanity as an international organization, but was excited to learn that it also operated locally in Southern Alberta. She realized her biggest barrier – saving for a down payment – could be removed.

In 2019, Nicole was approved to buy a Habitat home, and she officially took possession last year. This was possible because of you – our dedicated sponsors, donors, volunteers and community partners.

I am so thankful for the sponsors and donors. They are investing in families and strengthening communities. It's a beautiful organization to be part of.

your support has made home ownership dreams come true

The day Nicole signed her mortgage and took possession of her new home felt like a dream. Even when she walked up to the door with the keys in her hands, it still didn’t feel real. But this home was hers. She started noticing the impact on her daughter immediately. Since moving, Nicole says she has seen Grace “come alive.”

She is so happy to have so many kids around. The social aspect has increased her confidence and taught her important life skills.

planning for
the future

In the next five years, Nicole plans to settle in and create friendships with other new Habitat homeowners. They plan to be involved in the community and pursue their passions.

This is possible for Nicole's family and so many others because of your support. Thank you.

We have stability and security; we are part of a strong community. I am proud of myself for investing in our futures. And so thankful for Habitat for making it possible.

message from board chair

The Board of Directors is happy to report that, despite significant uncertainty, 2020 was another strong year of growth and development for Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta.

While some of our operations were temporarily closed or modified, we saw the organization adapt and move forward to deliver its mission in an incredible way.

We send our sincere thanks to the Habitat team for their professional and thoughtful approach, and to you, our supporters for standing alongside us every step of the way. As always, it is true that nothing at Habitat can happen without your support.

The board sends its sincere thanks to every sponsor, donor, volunteer and community partner for choosing to live your values through us and make a life-changing difference for families in our community.
